Three alumni and five undergraduate brothers comprised the Phi Kappa Theta team that participated in the first-ever Walk-a-Thon sponsored by Team Walker, Inc. in Jersey City on June 27th. Jim Spaeth ’65, John Gawryluk ’76 and Nick Scalera '63 represented the Board of Directors of The Setonian Foundation, the alumni chapter of PKT at Seton Hall; the following members of NJ Phi Beta Chapter participated: President Bryan White, Reid Daniels, Hector Elfante, Neil Restaino and Brian Taylor. Proceeds from the event benefited Team Walker, a nonprofit agency founded in 1996 by Jerry Walker ’H and his brother Jasper to provide educational, recreational and cultural programs for at-risk youth in Jersey City. Phi Kappa Theta’s team raised $752 for Team Walker, including $417 from me and my friends and $335 from Jim Spaeth and his friends.

Under sunny skies, the brothers joined Jerry Walker, a youth drum corps and over 200 walkers of all ages on a relaxed trek along the Hudson River waterfront. Jerry thanked attendees for "making a difference for the youth of Jersey City." Participants enjoyed other entertainment events, such as face-painting, balloon twisting, basketball throws for younger children and refreshments. The kids were enthralled to pose for photos with Seton Hall’s "Pirate" mascot and his counterparts from the New Jersey NETS and the Somerset Patriots baseball team. Music was supplied by DJ Luther Wright. I showed up but had to forego the walk due to an Achilles heal injury sustained two days earlier at a charity tennis outing benefiting the SHU Seminary.
