Update on Brother Joseph E. Kroh III

Brother Joseph E. Kroh III of Louisville, Kentucky has had a distinguished career in secondary school teaching and coaching.

He spent about two years at Seton Hall, where he joined Phi Kappa Theta and was a member of the varsity track team. After leaving Seton Hall, Joe graduated from Bellarmine College with a B.A. in English and Philosophy in 1965. He did graduate work at Columbia University from 1966-67.

Since 1968, Kroh has been an English teacher at St. Xavier High School, Louisville. He was named an outstanding teacher by both St. X and the State of Kentucky. For 32 years, Joe was head coach of the school’s tennis team, acclaimed as one of the best programs in the South. His teams won 17 state championship and 27 consecutive regional titles.

Joe also coached a team from the USTA Southern Section to a national championship at the Billy Jean King/World Team Tennis National Junior Team finals. He still serves as an assistant tennis coach at St. X and as co-director of a tennis training center for 75 junior players.

For his efforts, Kroh was twice named National Tennis Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Halls of Fame of the Kentucky Tennis Association, Kentucky High School Athletic Association and Jefferson County Metro and the St. Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame and Circle of Honors.

Joe also spent 15 years in business journalism. He won an Apex Award for promotional writing for a Derby preview for Louisville Magazine and shared in two regional awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for enterprise reporting for Business First of Louisville. He also was among a group that prepared three years of promotional news coverage for St. X that received CASE awards.

Joe’s wife, Ann, is a hospital administrator. They have two children – daughter Ashley, 25, and son, Jeff, 29 – both of whom live and work in New York City. Ashley is a manager with the Google marketing office; Jeff is pursuing a career in acting.
