Joseph A. Quinlan, SHU’s Director of Athletics and Recreational Services since 2005, is resigning, effective October 8th. Law School Dean Patrick E. Hobbs, who has overseen the athletics department since July, said Deputy Director Duane Bailey and Senior Associate Director Ginger Fulton will oversee day-to-day operations until a replacement is hired. A national search will begin in January 2011.

Quinlan gave no reasons for leaving and no hint of future plans. The news release said he "is resigning to pursue other opportunities." Joe expressed pride in "what we have accomplished over the last five years," including upgrading athletic facilities and moving the men’s basketball program to the Prudential Center. He also arranged for the 2011 NCAA Eastern Regional Playoffs to occur at The Rock and made sure Seton Hall complied with NCAA rules – no easy task. Hobbs said Joe’s leadership provided the department "with a solid foundation for future success" and wished him "the best of luck in his future endeavors."

In his own low-key, reliable way, Joe Quinlan carried out his duties with skill, style and professionalism. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for his tireless efforts to advance SHU athletics. Joe’s a sincere, likeable guy who deserves the very best.
